Letter to HPD
Commissioner Shaun Donovan
NYC Department of Housing Preservation &
Development
100 Gold Street
New York, NY 10038
November 14,
2008
Dear Commissioner Donovan:
Over the course of the summer, we as a community
devoted much effort to organizing a charrette that would have brought
together stakeholders to develop a vision for a redeveloped Broadway
Triangle. This charrette would have included over 100 community
leaders and residents from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, and
Williamsburg, reaching over racial, ethnic, and religious divides
between those communities. To bring together such diverse voices
would have been a historic event.
Unfortunately the event was postponed. This
postponement left residents frustrated and angry with the belief that
they would have no voice in shaping the largest development district
in their neighborhood.
Those who would have participated in the
September 3rd charrette are still waiting for their chance
to be heard. There is a broad consensus that we must find a new
opportunity for public participation in this process. With this aim
in mind, the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition (BTCC) has begun
planning another charrette, sponsored by community leaders, and has
scheduled it for Tuesday, December 2, 2008.
The members of the BTCC ask that the City
postpone the November 17th Broadway Triangle scoping
session for six weeks. This postponement will allow the community
enough time to hold its charrette and release its findings to the
public at large. Any documents presented at a scoping session that
have not emerged from a dialogue with the community will be considered
less than helpful.
We look forward to working with you to achieve a
new level of dialogue and inclusion in this most critical planning
process. It is our intention to proceed in this manner, and we ask
that the City respond in kind and make the necessary adjustments to
its timetable. It is all of our responsibility to make this a
successful collaboration.
Please send your response, by email and letter,
as soon as possible. Any response will be automatically forwarded to
the representatives of our member groups.
Sincerely,
