"Do Over" by Wmsbrg-Bushwick-Bed Stuy Leaders to Create Real Community Plan for Disputed B'way Triangle

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Representatives of a wide spectrum of neighborhood organizations from areas affected by the proposed re-zoning of the "Broadway Triangle," at the intersection of Williamsburg, Bedford Stuyvesant and Bushwick, will come together Wednesday (December 3rd, 4pm-9pm, at Woodhull Hospital, Flushing near Broadway, Brooklyn) to develop a plan for the area to present to the City.
The "charrette" or community planning workshop comes one week after the Coalition delivered 3800 letters to HPD Commissioner Donovan demanding that he re-start the planning process only after hearing from the entire community.
They will be re-doing a prior charrette that they charge was limited to an "unrepresentative, handpicked collection of agents of a politically connected partnership" at the expense of the larger community, including significant elements of Latino and Hasidic residents not connected to that partnership, identified as Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizen Council and United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg. Ridgewood Bushwick and UJO are closely affiliated with Brooklyn Democratic Leader, Assemblyman Vito Lopez.
HPD recently granted site control without prior public notice of 100 Throop Avenue, a large city-owned part of the proposed re-zoning Triangle area to the "Ridgewood Bushwick-UJO partnership," for a $32 million development under their control. Coalition leaders called the action a "totally inappropriate, premature at best, and illegal effort by the City to implement its secret plan that has not been adopted, no less discussed."
Council Member Diana Reyna declared:
"This charette should have taken place over a year ago. The public must have input into the planning and disposition of this publicly owned land so that it can serve the interests of all local stakeholders – not just the narrow interests of a politically connected few. I am proud that our community leaders have come together in the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition, to counter the back room deals that have dominated the planning process so far. I hope that HPD is listening. This community demands to have its voice heard!"

The Broadway Triangle Community Coalition is made up of 40 major housing, religious, tenant and neighborhood groups throughout the Williamsburg, Bedford Stuyvesant and Bushwick neighborhoods.
