Brooklyn Communities Finally Get Chance to Weigh In on Triangle

December 4, 2008, Brooklyn – Over 60 community residents, business owners and religious leaders from Bushwick, Williamsburg, and Bedford-Stuyvesant came together last night at Woodhull Hospital to take part in a community- sponsored charrette for the Broadway Triangle section of north Brooklyn.  Hosted by the Broadway Triangle Community Coalition (BTCC), the event participants gathered to develop a vision for the redevelopment of the largely vacant industrial area.
The charrette comes after months of protest and community organizing in reaction to the ongoing planning process, overseen by the City Department of Housing Preservation and Development, for the area.  Disagreement over the City's handling of the redevelopment was clear at a November 17th public meeting, where several BTCC members and community residents testified.  "We went there to let the City know that we feel we have been ignored by them and left out of their plans.  They have claimed from the beginning that this has been an inclusive process.  That is simply not the case," Anita Dunbar, BTCC member and Bedford-Stuyvesant resident said.
Last night's event comes over a year after a previous City-sponsored charrette for the area, which the BTCC has claimed did not include a wide enough array of area stakeholders.  "The City's 2007 charrette only included a few select community groups and virtually no representation of Bedford-Stuyvesant.  The Triangle borders three neighborhoods, Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Bedford-Stuyvesant.  We wanted an event which would include the voices of all three communities," explained BTCC member Juan Ramos.
The results of the charrette will be compiled by a professional planning firm and released later this month.
